Václav Erben (born November 2, 1930 in Náchod , Czechoslovakia , † April 19, 2003 in Prague ) was a Czech journalist and writer.

Life

After graduating from the commercial academy, he studied theater dramaturgy and radio directing at the theater faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague . After military service, he worked as a journalist and publishing editor, then from 1977 to 1990 in the Barrandov film studios .

Works

Václav Erben wrote twelve books, the main character of which was “Captain Exner”, a thoughtful detective. His books Poklad byzantského kupce (The Byzantine Merchant's Treasure), Čas pracuje pro vraha (Time works for the murderer) and Smrt talentovaného ševce (The Death of a Gifted Shoemaker) have been filmed. In November 1989 he was elected the first chairman of the Czech Association of Detective Fiction Authors. At the same time he became politically active. From 1993 he was spokesman for the chairman of the Czech Social Democratic Party for three years . For several years he was the vice-chairman of the Czech TV Council.
