Víctor Mercante

Víctor Mercante (born February 21, 1870 in Merlo (Buenos Aires) , † September 20, 1934 in Los Andes (Chile) ) was an Argentine educator and writer .

Mercante attended school in his hometown and studied at the Escuela Normal de Paraná . He began teaching as a teacher at various secondary schools in the province of San Juan. His broad scientific interest made him open to modern educational concepts . In the text Museos escolares argentinos y la escuela moderna he set out the goals of a modern school education for Argentina. On behalf of Joaquín Victor González , Mercante organized the establishment of the Pedagogical Section at the Universidad de La Plata after 1905 . He then became General Inspector for Normal, Secondary and Special Schools at the Ministry of Justice and Education, and worked with Minister Carlos Saavedra Lamas to prepare a draft for reforming secondary schools in Argentina. Although this was rejected in parliament, it was reflected in Mercante's work La crisis de la pubertad y sus consecuencias pedagógicas (1918).

In 1920 Mercante left the civil service, but wrote other educational writings and a number of articles for the Archivos de Pedagogía y Ciencias Afines . He also emerged as a dramatist and wrote the libretto for Ernesto Drangosch's opera El Carnaval . He died in 1934 on his way back from the Congreso Internacional de Educación in Chile.
