Víctor Montoya (born June 21, 1958 in La Paz ) is a Bolivian writer , journalist and educator . He is considered to be an important source of inspiration for modern Bolivian literature.

Life

Montoya lived since childhood in the mining settlements of Siglo XX and Llallagua , in the north of Potosí , where he saw the suffering of the miners with his own eyes and took part in their labor disputes.

Political persecution

Because of his political activities, Montoya was persecuted, tortured and imprisoned in 1976 under the military dictatorship of Hugo Banzer Suárez . In the state penitentiary Panóptico Nacional de San Pedro and in the maximum security prison of Chonchocoro-Viacha he wrote his first factual novel Huelga y Nahrungsmittel (Strike and Oppression, 1979).

exile

After being freed from prison by an Amnesty International campaign , he went into exile in Sweden in 1977 . He settled in Stockholm , studied pedagogy at the higher teachers' college there and worked as a teacher for several years. He headed the literary magazines PuertAbierta and Contraluz and is a member of the Swedish Writers' Association and the International Pen Club ( PEN ).

Literary work

His work has been translated into various languages ​​and some of his stories have been included in international anthologies. He writes for various Latin American, European, and American publications.
