Victor Noriega

Victor Noriega (born May 5, 1978 in Vancouver ) is a Filipino-born American jazz pianist , composer and band leader.

Life and work

Noriega grew up in Portland and Seattle. He began his musical career as a jazz pianist at the age of 18. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Washington .

The Victor Noriega Trio, which includes bassist Willie Blair and drummer Eric Eagle, has existed since 2000. Three albums have been released over the years: Stone's Throw 2004, Alay 2006 and Fenceless 2008. The third album featured trumpeter Jay Thomas and alto saxophonist Mark Taylor.

For Stone's Throw the trio received a nomination for the Earshot Jazz "Golden Ear Awards" for Best Northwest Acoustic Jazz Group 2005. Alay , which included original compositions as well as jazz-arranged interpretations of traditional Filipino songs, brought Noriega the "Golden Ear Awards" for the "Best Northwest Instrumentalist Of The Year" and "Best Album Of The Year" 2006. Noriega's combo also performed at the three-day “Asian American Jazz Festival” 2009 in Los Angeles. Also in 2009 there was an appearance at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival for the first time.

Noriega's trio has also performed in Shanghai since 2005 , for example in the jazz club "JZ Club". Noriega's piano style has been compared in the press to that of Dave Brubeck and Brad Mehldau . According to the AllaboutJazz interview, he orients himself to Horace Silver . Noriega lives in Seattle .
