The VBC Kanti Baden is a Swiss volleyball club from Baden in Aargau . The association was founded in 1971. From 2001 to 2004 the first men's team - the first Aargau team - was represented in the National League A (NLA). In the recent past, the first women's team made it back to the NLB in 2019/2020.

The VBC Kanti Baden offers popular and competitive sports and with more than 200 active members in 19 teams is one of the largest volleyball clubs in the region. Sustainable youth development is at the center of the association's philosophy. In addition to sports training, social aspects such as fair play and team spirit should be conveyed.

history

The VBC Kanti Baden was founded in 1971 by members of the teaching staff at the Baden Cantonal School . Gymnastics teacher Rolf Meier ignited the volleyball spark in teacher gymnastics after he had learned the basic techniques of the new sport from the Windischer volleyball team under the direction of Frank Schmied. Frank Schmied - then President of the Swiss Volleyball Association and one of the defining figures in Swiss volleyball (member of the CEV Sports Commission, FIVB Chief Financial Officer) - offered to make the first Kanti team fit for the championship. In the 1971/72 season, VBC Kanti Baden was the first school team to take part in the national championships in Aargau / Central Switzerland. The teaching team was soon reinforced with talented students and Kanti provided two men's teams and one women's team in the second 1972/73 season.

With the formulation of association statutes in June 1980, the VBC Kanti Baden only got an actual association structure. Together with the new board of directors, Zappa Zurmühle became the first president to replace the one-man company Res Anderegg. In 1984 the first men's team rose to the NLB; at the same time, women 1 managed to move up to the highest regional league. The club grew rapidly and developed into the leading volleyball club in Aargau in the 1980s. A highlight of the early club history was the cup game against the multiple NLA champion and cup winner Leysin on January 17th, 1988. Almost 700 spectators found themselves in the Kantihalle and celebrated every point when Kanti almost won the third set. In the junior division, the A1 juniors with their trainer Andreas Schibli earned the reputation of series champions in Aargau. After many years at the top of the NLB, the first men's team made it to the top game league in the 1999/2000 season under coach Lorenz Ursprung. At the same time, Kanti developed a new concept for young talent. With the founding of the volleyball school, the club also offered volleyball training for under 16s. As "NAB Kanti Baden", the men's 1 played for three seasons in the NLA. In the 2003/2004 season he was relegated voluntarily - primarily for financial reasons.

The longstanding dominance of the men ended in 2005/2006 with relegation to the first division. Now there was increasing female power. In the fourth attempt, the women 1 under coach Harald Gloor made it to the NLB in 2012/2013. One of the key players was the then 17-year-old Laura Künzler , who made the leap abroad in 2016 as one of the first Swiss volleyball players . After an NLB season, both Harald Gloor and the majority of the team left the club in 2014. This player vacuum made itself felt through the descent of women 1 to the regional 2nd division. With the long-standing junior trainer Moritz Fischer, a new women 1, now increasingly with home grown, could be built. In the 2017/2018 season he was promoted to the first division and only two years later Kanti made his comeback in the NLB. The promotion season 2019/2020 ended the women 1 in eleventh place and thus secured the league. In the coming 2020/2021 season, the previous assistant coach Martin Mühlebach will take on the role of head coach.

In the 2013/2014 season, the first men's team made it back to the NLB after ten years. After a season in the second highest game league, the team around coach Markus Graber missed the league and has been playing in the first division ever since.
