The VDI 6022 is a guideline of the technical building equipment department of the Association of German Engineers . In 2003, the SWKI (Swiss Association of Building Technology Engineers) took over the content of VDI 6022 and published it as SWKI VA104-1 . The VDI guideline is written in German and English, the SWKI version in German and French. This guideline is considered a recognized rule of technology. In the event of damage, when assessing liability, experts often rely on whether such guidelines have been adhered to. The guideline VDI 6022 describes the state of the art with regard to the hygiene requirements for air conditioning systems and devices and for the assessment of the indoor air quality. The third, revised version of the series of guidelines has been available since 2011. It bears the main title "Air conditioning, indoor air quality".

VDI 6022 Sheet 1: Hygiene requirements for ventilation and air conditioning systems and devices

scope of application

Part 1 of guideline VDI 6022 Hygiene requirements for ventilation and air conditioning systems and devices defines the scope of the series of guidelines for all rooms in which people are intended to spend more than 30 days per year or regularly for more than two hours. It applies to all supply air systems as well as to exhaust air systems if these influence the supply air quality through circulating air.

In contrast, the area of ​​application of Part 1 of VDI 6022 specifically includes all ventilation and air conditioning systems (RLT systems) and devices and their central and decentralized components (including units, e.g. recooling plants) that influence the supply air quality. The respective maintenance intervals are specified for the components in a maintenance checklist. The major hygiene inspection must be carried out at intervals of 2 or 3 years. The distance depends on the humidification devices installed in the system or components laid in the ground.

General hygiene requirements for air conditioning systems

RLT systems should ensure a physiologically favorable room climate and a hygienically perfect quality of the indoor air. They are to be planned, executed, operated and maintained in such a way that they:

  • do not endanger health,
  • do not disturb the well-being and thermal comfort,
  • do not lead to unpleasant odors and
  • Safely avoid exposure to inorganic and organic contaminants.

Planning, construction and commissioning of air conditioning systems

The hygiene directive places requirements on:

  • the planning of air conditioning systems (air intake, access for inspection and cleaning, filters, air volume flow, dimensioning of the air duct systems, prevention of damp spots, etc.) and
  • the manufacture and construction of air conditioning systems (installation of only clean components, closed openings during the construction period, cleaning before commissioning, etc.).

Air conditioning systems must be operated and maintained in such a way that hygiene requirements are permanently met. After the initial hygiene inspection, the hygiene inspection and hygiene controls according to VDI 6022 Part 1 are used for this.

Hygiene inspections

Hygiene inspections are divided into “initial hygiene inspection” and “repeat hygiene inspection”. The operator of the HVAC system is informed in writing of the result of the hygiene inspection. The hygienic status of the inspected HVAC system is documented in it. If necessary, necessary measures are recommended.

The initial hygiene inspection includes:

  • Content of the repeat hygiene inspection
  • Definition and marking of the sampling locations for the hygiene controls and inspections (hygiene monitoring)
  • Review of the implementation of all requirements of this guideline using the checklist from VDI 6022 Part 1.1.
  • The contents of the hygiene controls and hygiene inspections are shown by component in a checklist in Part 1 of VDI 6022.

The repetitive hygiene inspections of air conditioning systems by qualified personnel must be carried out:

  • in the case of systems with air humidification or with underground pipes every two years
  • in the case of systems without air humidification and without underground components every three years.

Hygiene training

Four different qualification categories have been created for hygienically perfect planning, construction, maintenance, hygiene control and inspection.

Category RLQ VDI-certified specialist engineer RLQ

Engineers in the field of technical building equipment, supply technology or equivalent training with five years of professional experience in the field of air conditioning systems can be certified by DINCERTCO after training at a VDI-certified training center. One of the prerequisites is passing the examination in category A. The training comprises at least 27 teaching units of 45 minutes each.

Category A for planners, hygienists and facility inspectors

Engineers, technicians and masters in the field of technical building equipment, supply technology or equivalent training with several years of professional experience in the field of air conditioning systems can be tested in category A after a relevant training at a VDI training partner. This category is a prerequisite for performing inspections as a specialist.

Category B for fitters, maintenance and cleaning staff

Ventilation and system technology fitters with a professional qualification or several years of experience can have themselves tested in category B by a VDI training partner after a hygiene training course.

Category C for owners, operators (caretakers)

Owners of an air conditioning system (e.g. home ventilation) can be qualified according to category C for the maintenance of the system on which the instruction took place after instruction by a category A specialist. Operators of commercially used systems should also have a basic knowledge of hygiene.

VDI 6022 Part 1.1

The guideline serves as the basis for the system inspection as part of an initial hygiene inspection according to VDI 6022 Part 1.The aim is to issue a certificate of conformity for the compliance of the respective ventilation and air conditioning system with the requirements of VDI 6022 Part 1.

VDI 6022 Part 1.2

The guideline describes how hygiene in air conditioning systems can be ensured with underground ducts. The guideline applies to all ventilation and air conditioning systems and components within the scope of VDI 6022 Part 1. It describes the hygiene requirements for underground air ducts, particularly in construction-related outside air intakes without thermal insulation and in geothermal heat exchangers. It includes information on the design and hygienic construction of underground ducts, taking into account the protection goals specified in the VDI 6022 guidelines.

VDI 6022 Part 1.3

The guideline provides information on the practical assessment of the broom cleanliness of air conditioning systems in accordance with VDI 6022 Part 1. Measurement methods preferred in European standardization are evaluated in relation to known measurement methods according to VDI 6022. In addition, instructions are given on cleaning air conditioning systems with the aim of cleaning the brooms.

VDI 6022 Part 3

Part 3 of the series of guidelines was previously published as VDI 6038. It provides assessment values ​​for evaluating the indoor air quality. The first edition of VDI 6022 from 1998 was based on the then valid DIN 1946 and thus had the air conditioning system as the system limit. The new European standards that replace DIN 1946 have a broader scope. It also includes the air quality in the room, even if this is only partially influenced by the air conditioning. With Part 3, the VDI takes this expanded view into account. The guideline is particularly applicable to new buildings, changes in use or renovations or complaints from users. The guideline distinguishes between three assessment levels with graduated measurement effort.

VDI 6022 Part 4

The guideline describes the instruction and training of the categories C, B, A, RLQ, which are necessary for the application of the other sheets of the guideline series. For each training category, the target groups with the entry requirements, the learning content and the framework conditions are presented.

VDI 6022 Part 5

The guideline provides a basis for assessing the avoidance of allergenic exposure through technical devices and products. The guideline describes the application of existing measurement, testing and evaluation methods in the interests of consumers. Methods are described for the avoidance of harmful substances and allergens, which largely protect people from contact and inhalation of harmful substances of different origins. The guideline is aimed in particular at professional groups whose actions have an impact on breathing air quality (architects and engineers, interior decorators, manufacturers of devices, components and products), testers and consumers concerned.

VDI 6022 Part 6

This guideline applies to the targeted and selective air humidification by decentralized individual devices as well as for decorative water-carrying facilities that influence the room air humidity (e.g. fountains, watercourses, water walls). Devices that were originally intended for private use and are used in workplaces are also subject to the requirements of this VDI guideline. From these devices there is a particular hazard potential that z. B. can arise due to unfiltered introduction of microbiologically contaminated breathing air and inadequate maintenance.

VDI 6022 Part 7.1

In sheets 7.1 to 7.x, industry-specific features relating to the subject of "air conditioning, air quality" are to be described in future. The first draft was published in December 2012 with sheet 7.1 “Waste treatment plants”. This sheet of the series of guidelines will replace the previous VDI 2163.
