Rubén Omar Capitanio (* Los Hornos, Argentina ) is an Argentine Catholic priest and human rights activist .

Life

In 1972, during the dictatorship of Alejandro Lanusses , Capitanio was the prison chaplain in Olmos. After reporting some guards for mistreating inmates, he was forced to quit his job in the prison for the time being. It was only after democratic elections took place in 1973 that Capitanio was able to return to work as a prison chaplain. During the military dictatorship of the National Reorganization process (from 1976), he interceded for the Desaparecidos during the Mass in his community in San Carlos de Berisso ( Province of Buenos Aires ) .

On August 4, 1976, Capitanio received a phone call from Antonio José Plaza , the archbishop of La Plata , who was close to the dictatorship, warning him not to sleep in La Plata that night. On August 7, Capitanio fled to the diocese of Neuquén , where he was protected by Bishop Jaime de Nevares, who was involved in human rights issues . Since then, Capitanio has been a priest in Neuquén.

Coming to terms with the military dictatorship

In 2002, Capitanio wrote an open letter to the Argentine Bishops' Conference in which he accused the church hierarchy of having distanced itself insufficiently from the process of national reorganization. In 2003 he signed another open letter asking members of the Argentine hierarchy to speak about their role in the military dictatorship. The admission of guilt, which the Argentine Church made at the National Eucharistic Congress in Cordoba in 2000 , was described by Capitanio as insufficient.

In 2007 Capitanio testified in La Plata as a witness in the trial of the priest and police chaplain Christian von Wernich , who was involved in murders, tortures and kidnappings during the dictatorship. Capitanio had met von Wernich in 1970 in the seminary in La Plata. The criminal case against von Wernich described Capitanio as a "service to the church" that helps her to "seek the truth".
