Antonio José Plaza

Antonio José Plaza (born December 21, 1909 in Mar del Plata , Argentina , † August 11, 1987 in La Plata , Argentina) was Archbishop of La Plata .

Life

Plaza studied at the seminary of La Plata and received on 21 December 1934, the priestly ordination . He then became a professor at the La Platas seminary and later its rector.

Pope Pius XII appointed him on May 16, 1950 titular bishop of Doberus and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the diocese of Azul . He was ordained bishop on July 25th of the same year by Zenobio Lorenzo Guilland , Archbishop of Paraná . Co- consecrators were Anunciado Serafini , Bishop of Mercedes , and Germiniano Esorto , Bishop of Bahía Blanca . On August 28, 1953, he was appointed Bishop of Azul.

On November 14, 1955, Pius XII appointed him. finally to the new Archbishop of La Plata. There he founded a Catholic university in 1964 and a theological institute that today bears his name.
During this time he was also a political supporter of Juan Domingo Perón . In 1976 he became the Buenos Aires Province Police Chaplain. Plaza was accused of collaborating with the military junta . According to a report in the New York Times , he was a staunch supporter of the military regime's dirty war against political opponents. The National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons , which had been investigating human rights violations during the military dictatorship since the end of 1983, initiated proceedings against Archbishop Plaza, which were discontinued in 1984.

Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on December 18, 1985. Antonio José Plaza continued to live in La Plata, where he died in August 1987 after a heart attack.
