The Archdiocese of Bahía Blanca ( Latin : Archidioecesis Sinus Albi , Spanish : Arquidiócesis de Bahía Blanca ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Argentina . It is based in Bahía Blanca .
history
The archbishopric was founded on April 20, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. separated from the diocese of La Plata , to which it was subordinated as a suffragan . On September 13th of the same year, Leandro Bautista Astelarra, the first bishop was appointed. In 1950 there were 500,000 Catholics (89.3%) in the Archdiocese in 47 parishes with 51 diocesan priests , 46 religious priests and 280 religious sisters . On February 11, 1957, it ceded various areas to establish the dioceses of Mar del Plata and Santa Rosa .
The now 82,634 km² large diocese was on the same day by Pius XII. raised to the archbishopric and metropolitan of the dioceses Alto Valle del Río Negro , Comodoro Rivadavia , Río Gallegos , San Carlos de Bariloche , Santa Rosa and Viedma .
The cathedral is called Nuestra Señora de la Mercedes .
Within the diocese there is a contemplative women's monastery, 43 branches of women's orders and 19 branches of various male orders.
