The VG Nicolaus GmbH & Co. KG is a packaging manufacturer from Kempten (Allgäu) . Outside Germany, there are three plants in France and one each in the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Latvia with 1,700 employees worldwide.
history
From 1920 the company developed offset printing on parchment paper for the local dairy industry and its products. In 1936 Heinrich Nicolaus from Ronsberg sold the Kempten plant to Unilever . Unilever expanded the Kempten location to 400 employees.
During the rather light bombardment of Kempten by the Allies at the end of the Second World War , some bombs also hit the offset printing plant at Ostbahnhof . The factories were completely destroyed.
After the Second World War, one of the largest test laboratories for packaging on the European continent was established by 1956. Around 1000 people were employed by the company at that time. The production program included folding boxes and composite films. In the 1960s, the group, then known as 4P Nicolaus , relocated its headquarters to Kempten and from 1964 made Kempten a European packaging center. In 1973 the group exported its products to more than 30 countries and achieved total sales of 520 million DM .
In 1991 Unilever sold the 4P Nicolaus . after economic failures in the 1980s to the Dutch company Van Leer , which reduced the number of employees. In 1997 the Belgian Van Genechten group took over the company with 500 employees. In 1998 sales were 47 million euros. In 1960, Nicolaus also ran one in Cologne in addition to the Kempten production site .
