The VR-Bank Altenburger Land eG is a cooperative bank based in eastern Thuringia Schmölln in the district Altenburger Land . In addition to its administration, it currently has five branches in Schmölln, Altenburg , Gößnitz, Meuselwitz and Nobitz as well as four self-service points in Altenburg, Lucka, Treben and Nöbdenitz.

history

The founding history of the bank goes back to the middle of the 19th century. The Credit-Verein zu Altenburg, the bank's first legal predecessor, was founded on September 17, 1859. After the political change in 1989, there were two Volksbanks and two Raiffeisenbanks each in Altenburger Land, which over the years merged into today's VR-Bank Altenburger Land eG. In 1998 Raiffeisenbank Schmölln eG and Raiffeisenbank Altenburg eG merged to form Raiffeisenbank Altenburg-Schmölln eG. In 2003 the merger with Volksbank Schmölln eG took place to form VR-Bank Altenburger Land eG. In 2008 Volksbank Altenburg eG was merged into VR-Bank Altenburger Land eG. This united all the cooperative banks in the district.

In August 2017 there was another merger. The merger partner, the Schmöllner Wohnungsgenossenschaft eG, came from the regional real estate industry. From now on , the joint real estate portfolio in Altenburger Land will be managed under the brand name GEWO - Genossenschaftlich Wohnen .

German Skatbank

By resolution of the General Assembly on June 15, 2007, the Deutsche Skatbank was founded as a legally dependent branch of VR-Bank Altenburger Land eG with entry in the cooperative register of July 18, 2007 . On October 15, 2007, the Deutsche Skatbank started operations; its headquarters have been in Schmölln since November 2016. Deutsche Skatbank acts as a direct bank with a focus on business customers. In addition, services for private customers and associations are offered.

In 2014, the Deutsche Skatbank received public attention because it was the first German credit institution to charge negative interest on credit balances. Anyone who invested more than 3 million euros in total had to pay negative interest of 0.25 percent from November 1, 2014. In doing so, the bank reacted to the European Central Bank's penalty interest rate policy . On October 1, 2019, the negative interest rate for private and business customers was increased further to 0.5% after several previous interest rate hikes. For both customer groups, the negative interest rate has since applied to credit balances of € 100,000 or more. In a further step, this exemption for negative interest was reduced to just € 25,000 on January 1, 2020 and has since then only been valid for the first account held with the bank of a respective customer.

The name of the bank refers to the card game Skat , which was invented in Altenburg , the seat of the bank at the time .
