The VR class A1 was a series of wet steam locomotives for passenger transport that was procured by the Finnish state railway company Valtionrautatiet between 1860 and 1863. They were built at Canada Works in Birkenhead , England.
As usual at the beginning of the railway construction, the locomotives were given names: 1 - Alutar , 2 - Lemminkäinen , 3 - Ilmarinen , 4 - Suomi , 5 - Voima and 6 - Pohja .
history
With the construction of the first railway line in Finland between Helsinki and Hämeenlinna , locomotives had to be procured for its operation. Initially, four locomotives were ordered from Canada Works in Birkenhead, England. These arrived in Finland in individual parts in autumn 1860 and were fully assembled in the Valtionrautatiet workshop in Helsinki .
The Ilmarinen was the first to be completed, making it the first locomotive in Finland. She carried out her test drive between Helsinki and Pasila on August 8, 1861 . The Lemminkäinen drove the inauguration train from Helsinki to Hämeenlinna on January 31, 1862 , where regular traffic began on March 17, 1862.
Originally the locomotives only had names, which were supplemented by numbers in 1865. The names were removed in 1868.
Technical specifications
The two-cylinder locomotives had an axle mass of 8.9 tons. They were equipped with the Gooch controls developed by Daniel Gooch in 1843. Over the years, the locomotives received new water pumps , steam brakes and boilers .
The A1 were the most powerful passenger locomotives of the Finnish State Railways until the 1890s.
commitment
The locomotives were initially based in Helsinki and used in passenger and freight traffic. As the stock of locomotives grew, the A1 migrated to lower-quality services and were used for work trains and shunting tasks. The 3 - Ilmarinen was moved to Riihimäki in 1875 , and at the turn of the century the other locomotives were also located in other depots.
Whereabouts
The locomotives were retired in 1911 and 1912 and for the last few months only drove work trains or were used as reserve locomotives until they were shut down.
