The VR Bank Westthüringen eG is a cooperative bank in the region Westthüringen headquartered in Muehlhausen / Thuringia .
History of the bank
On November 17, 1857, the Gewerbebankverein, the oldest forerunner of VR Bank Westthüringen eG , was founded in Gotha . Its members were both customers and sponsors of their institute. They were jointly and severally liable for all business risks and distributed the resulting profits fairly. The principles of self-help, self-management and personal responsibility applied.
Less than three years after Gotha was founded, 16 citizens came together in Bad Langensalza to initiate the next credit association, Mühlhausen followed in 1862 with the impressive number of 230 registered members in the first financial year.
In 1890 the Altengotterner Loan Fund Association was established as the first company in West Thuringia based on the rural loan fund model of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen . From it later the Raiffeisenkasse Altengottern developed and after the Second World War the "Landwirtschaftliche Dorfgemeinschaft Altengottern und Umgebung eGmbH" and finally the Raiffeisenbank Mühlhausen. At the end of the 19th century, both Gothaer Gewerbebank and the advance payment associations in Langensalza and Mühlhausen had long since ceased to be just credit business. Customers could order practically all the usual banking services from them, from savings investments to stock exchange transactions.
The associations became commercial banks and thus the forerunners of the later Volksbanks in West Thuringia. The first major merger took place in 1973 between the cooperative banks for handicrafts and businesses in Mühlhausen and Bad Langensalza.
In 1997, after several name changes, Raiffeisenbank Mühlhausen eG, Raiffeisenbank Bad Langensalza eG and Volksbank Mühlhausen / Bad Langensalza eG merged to form VR Bank Mühlhausen / Bad Langensalza eG.
VR Bank Westthüringen eG, which emerged from VR Bank Mühlhausen / Bad Langensalza eG and Volksbank Gotha / Eisenach eG, has been available to its members and customers as one of the largest cooperative financial service providers in Thuringia since 2000.
