Vaghela

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vaghela (also Baghela or Vyagrapatti ) were a short-lived ruling dynasty of the 13th century in what is now the Indian state of Gujarat . Their center of power was the city of Dholka .

history

The Vaghela, who had already been largely independent but officially still acted as vassals and ministers of the ruling Solanki dynasty, gradually seized power around 1230/40. They succeeded in repelling Muslim advances in the second half of the 13th century, but in 1299 Ala ud-Din Khalji , the Sultan of Delhi , put an end to their rule.

buildings

The brothers Vastupala and Tejapala, ministers and generals of the Vaghela, founded the Luna Vasahi Temple in the temple district of Dilwara near Mount Abu around 1230 . Some temples on Mount Girnar are also attributed to the Vaghela rulers. Since both cases are Jain shrines, the Vaghela dynasty is sometimes assumed to have a certain closeness or even affiliation to the Jain religious community . Another Vaghela prince by the name of Rana Veer Singh is said to have started building the Adalaj stepwell towards the end of the 15th century .
