Vaisala RS41
The Vaisala RS41 is a radiosonde from the Finnish manufacturer Vaisala . It is (as of 2018) used by many weather services in regular operation.
history
The radiosonde was presented by Vaisala at the World Expo 2013 in Brussels, but was initially not used by European weather services. In the course of 2017, test flights by the Bundeswehr and the German Weather Service (DWD) took place. The probe has been in regular operation by the German Armed Forces and DWD since the beginning of 2018, mostly replacing the previously used Vaisala RS92 .
technology
The housing of the probe is approximately 200 mm × 60 mm × 50 mm. From 2018, the housing was made entirely of Styrofoam , while previously a solid outer shell made of ABS surrounded the Styrofoam parts .
At the top end there is the sensor unit and a rod for attaching the probe cord. At the lower end there is a λ / 4 antenna for the UHF band. In contrast to the previous model, the GPS antenna is internal. Two LEDs and a button are available as display and control elements , but the probe is usually switched on by the user via the integrated NFC interface. Before the start, the LEDs indicate that the device is functioning correctly and that the GPS receiver is ready for operation, but they go out after the start. A finder, for example, can use the button to switch off the probe it has found. There is also a connection for external sensors on the lower edge.
Depending on the requirements of the measuring tasks, the probes can be equipped with optional modules for air pressure measurement or have special functions for military purposes.
The energy is supplied from two lithium iron sulfide cells of size AA.
