Vajira Abeywardena

Vajira Wadaknathi Abeywardena ( Sinhala වජිර අබේවර්ධන ; born September 2, 1963 ) is a Sri Lankan politician of the United National Party (UNP).

Life

After attending Mahinda College, Abeywardena completed a degree in engineering at the University of Moratuwa and began to work as a secretary and later as chairman of the United Socialist Students Front . Between 1982 and 1994 he was also a member of the Working Committee of the Youth Front of the United National Party (UNP). After completing his studies, he worked as an engineer and from 1989 to 1994 a member of the Provincial Council of the Southern Province .

In the election on August 16, 1994 Abeywardena, who was also Vice Secretary of the UNP in 1994, was elected for the first time as a member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and represented the constituency of Galle until his defeat in the election on April 8, 2010 . He was a temporary member of the Public Petitions Committee and was appointed Minister of Public Administration, Management and Reforms in December 2001 to the second government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe , of which he was until the end of his term in April 2004. As such, he was formally appointed cabinet minister on February 28, 2002.

In January 2015 Abeywardena was appointed Interior Minister in his third government by Prime Minister Wickremesinghe. In the election on August 17, 2015 , he was also re-elected as a Member of Parliament, in which he again represents the Galle constituency .
