Valär [faˈlæːr] (also written Valaer ) is an old Davos and Prättigau family.

The Valär, mentioned for the first time in 1396 as sovereign ammen of the court of Castels , raised the tithe in Fideris . At the end of the 15th century they maintained close relationships with the rulers of Matsch . In 1595 they were in possession of a sovereign Austrian fief , together with the aristocratic speakers . Bundslandammann Paul Valär († 1684; ⚭ Ursula Sprecher von Bernegg, * 1632 in Fideris, † February 15, 1675 in Parpan) acquired Vorburg Castle near Grimmenstein Castle near St. Margrethen . Since he had no male offspring, the family branch in Fideris died out with him. His daughter Magdalena (⚭ Johann Ulrich von Buol-Strassberg, * 1626 in Parpan, † February 13, 1687 in Parpan, Dr. Commissari).

His brother Jakob von Valär (* 1605, † January 13, 1688, 1⚭ 1625 Catharina Sprecher, 2⚭ 1679 Verena Buol) founded the Davos line and carried a title of nobility. A ennoblement is not attested. Jakob von Valär was Landschreiber von Davos in 1633, marriage judge and church bailiff of the Reformed Church in Switzerland in 1647. 1650/51 captain and governor of Davos. 1651–1652 he was a federal clerk of the Ten Court Association in Davos. In 1650 he drafted the Davos Criminal Code, which was adopted by the Ten Court Association in 1652. His descendants are still successful today in politics and business.

The Davos teacher, construction technician, architect and spa director Hans Valär (1871–1947) became known throughout Switzerland for his humorous stories written in the Walser German dialect due to his appearances on Radio Beromünster.
