The Vale dos Vinhedos (in German "Valley of the Vineyards") is a sub-region of the Serra Gaúcha low mountain range in the northeast of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

history

Immigrants from northern Italy laid vineyards on the steep slopes at about 215 m above sea level as part of the settlement in the 19th century . Today's Vale dos Vinhedos emerged from these origins.

wine growing

The valley on the 29th parallel with the main town of Bento Gonçalves offers good climatic conditions and is considered a model area for the Brazilian wine industry. According to experts, this could be due not only to significant investments in cellar technology but also to climate change , which has led to drier summers in the region. In the past, frequent heavy rains shortly before harvest time regularly prevented wines from being made. Today, wines from the region have received numerous awards and the Vale dos Vinhedos has also been recognized as a certified appellation by the European Union since 2007 . Among the predominantly cultivated varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir and white wines such as Riesling , Chardonnay , Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris .
