Valentin Blatz (born October 1, 1826 in Miltenberg ; † May 26, 1894 in Saint Paul ) was a German entrepreneur and founder of the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company .

biography

Valentin Blatz was born in Miltenberg , Bavaria, in 1826 . His parents were Casper and Barbara Blatz. After finishing school, he started working in his father's brewery at the age of 14. After completing his training, he spent several years in other breweries in Würzburg, Augsburg and Munich.

After his military service, he emigrated to the USA in August 1848 . There he worked for the Philip Borns brewery in Buffalo before settling in Milwaukee , a popular destination for German emigrants at the time.

Initially, Blatz worked in various breweries, including as master brewer and foreman for Johann Braun in his City Brewery . After five years, Blatz went into business for himself and opened his own brewery next to the Brauns. After Braun's death in 1852, he married his widow, Louise Braun, and merged the two companies.

The brewery grew over the coming decades and was officially registered as the Valentin Blatz Brewing Company in 1889 . Blatz held the office of president until his death.

In addition to working for the brewery, Blatz was also involved in rail transport and real estate businesses. From 1866 to 1894 he was President of the Second Ward Savings Bank. He also held the post of Alderman in Milwaukee from 1872 to 1873 . He was one of the people in charge of organizing the 1880 Milwaukee Industrial Exhibition.

Blatz was involved in various societies in Milwaukee. He was a member of the Milwaukee Old Settlers Society, the Milwaukee Brewers Association and the Chamber of Commerce.

Blatz died in Saint Paul on his return to Milwaukee in 1894 . He is buried in the Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee . At the time of his death, Blatz was one of the richest men in Milwaukee. His sons Albert and Valentin, Jr., took over the management of the business together with his son-in-law John Kremer.

Valentin Blatz married Louise Braun (née Schmitt, * 1826; † 1907) in 1852. With her he had three sons and two daughters.
