Valentin Deutschmann (born May 3, 1928 in Grafenstein ; † April 24, 2010 there ) was a farmer and Austrian politician. When he stepped down in 2008, he was Austria's longest serving mayor. From March 19, 1958 to the end of September 2008, he was the mayor of the market town of Grafenstein in Carinthia and was a member of the National Council for 20 years .

Life

After secondary school and vocational school, Valentin Deutschmann attended an agricultural college. In 1949 he became chairman of the Carinthian rural youth. In 1954 he was elected to the local council. In the 1958 election, he turned down the proposal to run for a list of names. Although his party did not have a majority, he became mayor. From 1962 he ran with a list of names and has always received an absolute majority since then. In his last election in 2003 it was 65.3% of the vote. After his resignation, his son Stefan, who had been Vice Mayor for over a decade, took over the office.

Valentin Deutschmann held a mandate in the National Council for the ÖVP from 1966 to 1986. 1970–1988 he was provincial chairman of the Carinthian Farmers' Union , active for 40 years in the Carinthian Chamber of Agriculture and from 1976 15 and 20 years its president. In other functions he worked as vice chairman of the Raiffeisen Association, as Raiffeisen treasurer and as chairman of the Grafenstein cooperative. In recognition of his services, he was awarded the professional title of economics councilor.

Valentin Deutschmann had two children with his wife Theresia. In 1993 Deutschmann was diagnosed with irreparable cardiac muscle damage and on April 25th he received a donor heart implanted. He also recovered from a stroke that soon followed with hemiplegia. His voice was impaired due to two vocal cord operations. Deutschmann died on April 24, 2010 at the age of 82.
