Valerie Fahnestock Steele (* 1955 ) is an American fashion historian.

Life

Steele received her PhD in history from Yale University and wrote her PhD on modern European intellectual history. Her topic was: Fashion and Eroticism in the Victorian Age . Steele came to the view that the cultural history of modernity received little attention in research and was not taken seriously as a research area. So the choice of topic for her doctoral thesis also met with incomprehension among the professors at the university.

She has been the director of the Fashion Museum of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York since 2003 . Steele is also the founder of Fashion Theory magazine . The journal of Dress, Body & Culture . In 2003 she received the Artistry of Fashion Award from the American Apparel & Footwear Association . She is also the editor of Fashion Theory magazine . The Journal of Dress, Body and Culture .
