Val Morobbia with Camoghè in the background

The Morobbiatal (Italian: Valle Morobbia ) is a side valley to the Magadino plain , which extends from the San Jorio Pass to Giubiasco. The two former municipalities of Pianezzo and Sant'Antonio TI (with the Carena fraction) in the Morobbiatal have belonged to the municipality of Bellinzona since 2017 .

geography

The Morobbia flows in the valley floor and flows into the Ticino at Giubiasco . Approximately at the level of Melirolo, it flows into the Lago di Carmena reservoir , into which the Melirolo brook flows. The dam is just before Carmena. On the valley side of the dam, it takes the Valmaggina from the left and flows past the village of Vellano.

The climate in the lower part is rather mild with chestnut trees, further up in the valley it is more alpine. Small landslides from the Camoghè are part of the history of the wild valley .

population

In the 20th century, the population in the upper part of the valley steadily declined, while numerous second homes were built. Most of the workforce works in the Bellinzona agglomeration.

Ventures

In 1464 the Muggiasca family began mining ferrous minerals from the Carena mines. The Morobbia power station has been in operation since 1903 . It uses the hydropower of the Morobbia and supplies Bellinzona with electricity.
