Ori Valtou or Valtos Mountains ( Greek Όρη Βάλτου , ( n. Pl. )) Refers to a mountain range on the border between the Greek regions of Thessaly , Epirus and western Greece .
geography
The Valtos Mountains, an elongated ridge, are separated from the Agrafa Mountains in the east by the deeply cut valley of the Acheloos River . They are made up of maquis and oak forest (Quercus), in higher areas with fir forest (Abies).
The highest peak of the Valtou Mountains is called Pyramida or Gavrovo (Γαβρόβο). The term “Gavrovo Massif” is sometimes used for the entire mountain range. Another mountain is Mount Kanala.

The Valtou Mountains are home to numerous bird species that are typical of Mediterranean forest and shrubbery landscapes:
- Middle Woodpecker ( Dendrocopos medius )
- Griffon Vulture ( Gyps fulvus )
- Red headed shrike ( Lanius senator )
- Rock nuthatch ( Sitta neumayer )
- Red hawk ( Falco naumanni )
history
During the German occupation of Greece in World War II, the Valtou Mountains formed the refuge of Napoleon Zervas' resistance group EDES .
