background
Vampire High comprises 26 episodes and is set at the fictional Mansbridge Academy.
Mark Shekter came up with the story on a night flight from Toronto to Cairns. At first he wanted to publish it as a comic. When he imagined the first scenes, however, it was clear to him that he wanted to film the story. He wrote the first episode of Vampire High after landing.
During the shooting, not all episodes were finished, but more scripts were created. Therefore, the actors also had a little influence on the further development of their characters.
Production of the series was interrupted for a short time during the first half of the shooting of the first season for budget reasons, but resumed a little later. Shortly thereafter, Meghan Ory announced that she wanted to get out of the series, which is why the character Sherry had to be written out of the series. Therefore, Dillan Vanderson, played by Marianne Farley , was introduced to the series as the new main character.
After the first season, the series was discontinued, although the script for the second season was written. No reasons were given for this, but it was assumed that this was due to budgetary reasons.
Vampire High has been shown on television in Canada, the United States, Italy, and Israel.
On March 1, 2005, the first DVD for the series was released in the United States. On the DVD, the first four episodes were cut into a 90-minute film. The film was titled Vampire High - School's A Pain In The Neck! . A little later, the next two DVDs were named Vampire High: Second Semester High School Bites and Vampire High Bites Back. They're Dying To Meet You! released.
In 2011, the Vampire High documentary Vampire High: 10 Years Later Documentary was produced and published by ATV . The 25-minute documentary discusses, among other things, how the series came about.
reception
The reviews for Vampire High have been mixed. On TV.com, users gave Vampire High 8 out of 10 points. The series received 6.6 out of 10 points on Imdb.
HM Grynberg from Unification France thinks the mythology about the origin of vampirism, the vampire relationships with humans, the other supernatural beings and the legends are interesting in the series, but are shown without any passion. The cliffhanger at the end of the series would leave a feeling of incompletion.
Spiked's Dolan Cummings believes that Vampire High lacks a strong female character, much like Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer . Vampire High has female characters that correspond to the stereotype of submissive Asian women. The series also does not show the image of the many women who break out of this role, which makes the whole thing a little boring. There is little violence and little humor in the series. However, some vampiric puns are good. There are also worse ways to pass the time than watching Vampire High .
