Vampyrella lateritia , the brick-red vampire amoeba, is a shellless amoeba from the family Vampyrellidae , tribe Cercozoa, living in freshwater.
features
The amoeba is spherical with a diameter of 30 to 40 micrometers. It has numerous thread-like pseudopodia and thus resembles a sun animal . Unlike these, however, it can move amoeboidly with the help of lobed pseudopodia that are also present. In the endoplasm there are contractile vacuoles , numerous cell nuclei and orange-red colored granules.
Occurrence and nutrition
The species occurs in all waters in which thread algae occur. It drills holes in their cell membranes and sucks out the cell contents.
