Georg Fresenius
Johann Baptist Georg Wolfgang Fresenius (born September 25, 1808 in Frankfurt am Main ; † December 1, 1866 ibid) was a German doctor and botanist specializing in algae . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Fresen. "
Life
From 1826 Fresenius studied medicine at the universities of Heidelberg , Würzburg and Gießen . During his studies in 1828 he became a member of the Old Giessener Burschenschaft Germania ; He was also a member of the fraternity Germania Würzburg and the fraternity in Heidelberg. He received his doctorate in Gießen in 1829 and settled in Frankfurt as a general practitioner, which he remained until his death despite all sideline activities. But botany remained his hobby, which he had already pursued during his school days and later in his university years in Heidelberg with his friend George Engelmann , who later became a German-American botanist.
From 1831 he was sectionary ( curator ) at the Botanical Garden of Dr. Senckenberg Foundation and at the " Herbarium Senckenbergianum " of the Senckenberg Natural Research Society. He also gave lectures at the Senckenberg Medical Institute in Frankfurt am Main, where he was appointed titular professor in 1863. It was also he who directed the interest of his pupil, who later became a physician and botanist Heinrich Anton de Bary , to research into algae and fungi and how to use the microscope .
Like the other sections of the Dr. Senckenberg Foundation, held botanical lectures and organized excursions even before the Frankfurt university was founded in 1914.

The genus Fresenia DC was named in his honor . of the Asteraceae plant family.
