Van den Blocke (artist family)

Von dem Block or vom Block (Flemish van den Blocke ) was a Flemish family of sculptors , architects , painters and other people who worked in the 16th and 17th centuries mainly in Gdansk , but also in Amsterdam , Koenigsberg and other places was active.

The oldest mentions of people with the name van den Blocke are known from the 14th century in Flanders.

The sculptors Aegidius and Willem van den Blocke emigrated from Mechelen to the east around 1665 , possibly for religious reasons ( Mennonites ). Aegidius was the first to come to Danzig, Willem followed a few years later. There he became an important and formative sculptor and architect. His son Abraham also created important works there. Other family members worked as sculptors, painters, carpenters and in other professions.

In Danzig only the German form of the name " Block" or " Block" was used .
