Space Launch Complex-3 (SLC-3, pronounced "Slick Three") is a launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California , USA .
SLC-3 was the first launch site for the US Atlas rocket. The launch complex was built in the early 1960s and consists of two launch platforms, SLC-3E and SLC-3W. In contrast to the launch facilities on the east coast of the USA, such as Cape Canaveral AFS and Kennedy Space Center , the coastline running from east to west allows payloads to be launched into polar orbits .
In 2003, the 3E launch complex was converted for the launch of Atlas V rockets. The 3W launch complex was used briefly to test the Falcon 1 rocket.
With Mars InSight (Discovery-12), an interplanetary mission was launched for the first time from the west coast of the USA on launch complex 3E.
