Vanessa - the friend of the ghosts

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vanessa - The Girlfriend of the Ghosts is the title of a German-language comic series from Bastei-Verlag . The series is assigned to the horror genre and was published fortnightly between 1982 and 1990, initially in small format (215 issues). Only at the end of the 1980s was it expanded to include 26 large volumes, two large-format special editions and 40 paperbacks. In addition, twelve selected booklets were transferred into radio play format by the Braun recording studio .

Characters from the comic series

The main character is Vanessa Bunburry, who lives with her parents at Westwood Manor Castle in the English county of Essex. She has the gift of seeing and talking to spirits. So it is not surprising that the ghost of the blond, about 16 year old boy Harold becomes her best friend. The latter lives in a nearby observation tower and gives Vanessa a magical amulet with which she can summon him at any time. In Harold's tower is the gate of time, through which both can enter the spirit realm. Together they experience gruesome, sometimes bizarre adventures in the hereafter but also in this world. Because especially in the area around Westwood Manor there are a lot of ghosts who become opponents, but also new friends. Other important characters are the vicious housekeeper Mrs. Hagglon and the dumb butler Brady, who never tire of searching for the mysterious treasure of Westwood Manor. The two form a funny and gloomy slapstick counterpart to the heroes Vanessa and Harold. A romantic relationship between the latter adds to the tension.

particularities

The small-format editions contained posters or, instead, additional short stories as well as "Die violette Seite". On this last page, Vanessa regularly addressed her readers herself by publishing drawings sent to the publisher and telling a little joke. In the large volumes, this marketing concept was expanded to include "Leila's magical side", which consisted of articles on occult topics penned by a supposedly authentic witch (a photo of Leila was always shown). All cover images and many poster motifs are based on hand-drawn or oil-painted templates in the style of classic romantic romanticism (also: black romanticism ).

Radio plays

From 1986, 12 episodes of Vanessa - The Girlfriend of the Ghosts were produced by the Braun recording studio . The episodes were only released on cassette and were around 50 minutes long. Speakers were u. a. Nina Danzeisen, Helmut Winkelmann and Erwin Scherschel . Due to a legal dispute, Bastei has withdrawn the licenses for Vanessa, Ghostbusters John Sinclair and a few other products. A later resumption of the series could not be realized.
