Vardiani ( Greek Βαρδιάνοι ( f. Pl. ), Pronunciation : [ varðjaˈni ], formerly Italian Guardiana ) is a small uninhabited island south of the Greek island of Kefalonia . Administratively it belongs to the local community Mantzavinata in the municipality of Paliki of the municipality of Lixouri .

history

The flat, elongated island is probably the island of Letoia mentioned by Pliny , which is said to be "ante Cephaloniam". On the island there are traces of earlier settlement as well as two chapels and the remains of a monastery.

On the island are the ruins of a lighthouse built in 1824 under the British governor Charles James Napier . He was 34 meters high. He showed the seafarers the entrance to the Argostoli Lixouri bay, four kilometers away. The lighthouse was damaged by the great earthquake in 1953 and is now only preserved as a ruin. In its place there is a much smaller beacon.

The island now belongs to the Kipouria Monastery. Various attempts to use the island for breeding rabbits failed.
