Varoddbrua ( Varoddbrücke ) is the common name for the two bridges standing next to each other, which lead the European route 18 over the Topdalsfjord in Kristiansand in Fylke Agder in Norway .

Varodd is the name of a small island on which the western abutments of the two bridges stand.

Gamle Varoddbrua (1956)

The Gamle Varoddbrua ( Old Varodd Bridge ) is a suspension bridge opened in 1956 , which today takes up traffic to the east on its two lanes. With a span of 337 m, it was Norway's longest suspension bridge until 1972.

It has a steel lattice girder with a concrete deck as a stiffening and deck girder, which bridges the main opening and four western and three eastern side panels. In the three eastern side panels, the roadway is curved in plan to avoid the high steep slope on the bank. The length of the bridge is usually given as 618 m, but Google Earth shows that the carriageway girder is around 650 m long and the eastern anchor blocks are installed a further 20 m away on the bank slope.

The pylons consist of simple reinforced concrete poles , which are connected at their upper end and about 2/3 of their height by cross members. Instead of the suspension cables, the Varodd Bridge has two layers of 6 ropes arranged one above the other. They are only connected to the carriageway girder in the main field and the western side fields by hangers, while the eastern side fields in the curve are only supported by the pillars.

It has sidewalks and cycle paths installed on both sides, but they can no longer be used since the opening of the new bridge.

Their clear height is 32 m.

Nye Varoddbrua (1994)

The Nye Varoddbrua ( New Varodd Bridge ) is a prestressed concrete bridge opened in 1994 , which was designed for three lanes from the beginning with a view to a future renovation of the old bridge. It takes over traffic going west in two lanes. The third lane serves as a wide footpath and bike path.

The 663 m long bridge is one of the largest prestressed concrete bridges in the world with a span of 260 m.

Its four openings are 80 + 200 + 260 + 120 m wide. It has a 14 m wide carriageway slab over a single-cell, haunched hollow box with a variable construction height, which is 14 m at the pillars.

Their clear height is 42 m.

New building

The detailed planning of a new bridge began in January 2015, as the maintenance of the old suspension bridge had become expensive and it was reaching the end of its life expectancy. The average traffic on the route is around 50,000 vehicles per day with a lot of bicycle traffic. The new construction will largely resemble the current prestressed concrete bridge and be built in the gap between the two existing bridges. The company Porr Norway Infrastructure was commissioned with the construction . Construction began in March 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2020. Then the old suspension bridge will be demolished.
