The Varta Microbattery (proper spelling VARTA Microbattery ) is a manufacturer of batteries based in Ellwangen in Aalen . It is a subsidiary of the listed Varta AG .

According to its own information, Varta Microbattery has 2000 employees worldwide, around 600 of them at the headquarters in Ellwangen in Baden-Württemberg . The main focus of research and development work is also located at the headquarters in Ellwangen. Around 150 researchers and developers work here with button cells . Production is also mainly carried out in Ellwangen, with around 80 percent of the products being exported abroad. The highly automated production systems are developed by Varta Microbattery and some are also manufactured.

Today's Varta Microbattery emerged from the split of the battery manufacturer Varta AG in 2002 . The predecessor companies of Varta Microbattery go back to 1887.

Business areas and cooperations

Volkswagen Varta Microbattery Research Company

In 2010, a joint venture was founded with Volkswagen AG to advance research into lithium-ion batteries for use in automobiles.

The joint venture is particularly concerned with researching cell materials for vehicle-specific lithium-ion battery cells. Volkswagen and Varta Microbattery each have a 50 percent stake in the company. The chairman of the supervisory board is the chairman of the board of Varta Microbattery, Herbert Schein.

Varta Microbattery and EnBW ODR

With the energy supplier EnBW Ostwuerttemberg DonauRies , Varta Microbattery has started a pilot project for the storage of renewable energies in lithium-ion battery storage systems in the public power supply network. The so-called peak storage system No. 1 - also known as INESS - is the first battery storage system in the power supply network that is intended to represent an alternative to pumped storage power plants in the medium term. In this joint project for intermediate energy storage, the use of decentralized battery storage systems in the supply network is to be tested and the resolved energy transition is to be further advanced.
