Varus tower

The Varus tower is a 21 m high observation tower built as a reinforced concrete structure on the Lammersbrink on the southern border of Georgsmarienhütte in Lower Saxony.

The observation tower was built in 1975 by the then construction company Carl Möller on behalf of the city of Georgsmarienhütte. The new tower replaced the lookout tower built in the same place in 1892 by the Georgsmarien-Verein AG , which, however, had to be blown up again in August 1935 because it was dilapidated. Varus tower after the Roman commander was named Varus , the year 9 AD. In the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest the Germanic commander his troops in the area of the Teutoburg Forest against Arminius (Hermann) resulted in a crushing defeat.

On the south-east neighboring Dörenberg the same design for Varus tower stands Hermannsturm . Both observation towers are connected by a hiking trail, the Kammweg . The Kammweg is part of the approximately 100 km long Ahornweg .

Blocking

After a routine check on October 4, 2016, the tower, just like its identical twin, was classified as dilapidated and closed.
