The Städtische Kornhofspeicher is a former granary in the Andreasviertel in Erfurt's old town . It stands in Grosse Ackerhofgasse with the northeast gable on Moritzstrasse and is one of the largest and best-preserved late medieval granaries and one of the most important secular buildings in the city. The Kornhofspeicher was built between 1465 and 1467 on the site of the former Jewish cemetery on behalf of the City Council and was subsequently used to store the interest grain. The building is a cultural monument , and the German Foundation for Monument Protection contributed financially to the renovation of the monument .

Establishment

The city of Erfurt had had a municipal granary since 1354, which was located on a site belonging to the Johannites near the Nikolaikirche . It is believed that there must have been a second, older granary next to it. Erfurt experienced an economic boom in the 15th century, so that the existing storage capacities were no longer sufficient to adequately supply the growing city population with grain in an emergency. Therefore, in 1465, the city council decided to build another granary and chose the former Jewish cemetery at Moritztor, today's Moritzstrasse, as the location. The building was erected in 1465 and 1466, put into operation in 1467 and finally completed in 1469; the construction costs amounted to around 4764 shock . It was thus possible to increase the storage capacity for bread grain from 4227 Malter (1429) to 7139 Malter.

description

The building has three floors and a four-storey, with beaver tails roofed hipped roof , under which the internal supporting structure has been preserved almost completely original with a vierschiffigen wooden structure. The elongated, almost right-angled building, 83 meters long and up to 25 meters wide, extends over 21 window axes and has a floor area of almost 1,800 square meters.

Todays use

The Kornhofspeicher was empty for a long time and several ideas for use were rejected. Finally, a private investor bought the area and planned to convert the storage facility into a multi-storey car park with 90 parking spaces. The external appearance of the storage tank should be preserved and the wooden structure should also be fully visible in the future. In 2009 a wood protection report revealed extensive woodworm infestation . For this reason, pest control took place in May 2010 in order to preserve the structure in its substance. Thereafter, the planned expansion to a residential car park began, which was delayed by a dispute between the investor and residents about the type of access to the upper floors. This was enclosed in accordance with the monument protection and the renovation continued in spring 2013. The building has been used as a parking garage since 2014.
