Hermannsturm (Georgsmarienhütte)
The Hermannsturm is a 21 m high observation tower built as a reinforced concrete structure on the Dörenberg in Georgsmarienhütte .
The viewing platform at a height of 352 meters above sea level allows a view to the southeast over the Teutoburg Forest , to the south to Bad Iburg and further into the Münsterland and to the north to the Wiehengebirge .
The observation tower was built in 1975 by the then Möller company on behalf of the city of Georgsmarienhütte. The new tower replaced the 12-meter-high "iron Hermann" built in the same place in 1898. The Hermannsturm was named after the Germanic military leader Arminius (Hermann), who in 9 AD led his troops to victory in the battle of the Teutoburg Forest against those of the Roman general Publius Quinctilius Varus .
On the northwestern neighboring Lammersbrink stands the Varus Tower , which is identical to the Hermannsturm . Both observation towers are connected by a hiking trail, the Kammweg .
Blocking
The observation tower, like its twin tower, was closed on October 4, 2016, as both towers were classified as dilapidated during a routine inspection.
