Vasco da Gama is an impact crater on the westernmost edge of the front of the moon , so if at all it is only visible from earth in a strongly distorted manner. The crater is northeast of Bohr and south of Dalton . It is very badly eroded. The interior is criss-crossed by cracks and has a concentric ring structure with a central peak .

The bottom of the secondary crater Vasco da Gama R is traversed by the lunar groove system of the Rimae Vasco da Gama .
The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama .
