← Division 1 1952/53 | |
The Division 1 1953-54 was the 16th staging of the professional French football league. The champions were the Lille OSC , which won its third title since 1933 .
The first game day was August 23, 1953, the last day was May 16, 1954. There was no winter break; rather, there was also play between the years.
societies
Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 15th, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation games between the first division 16. and second division third. Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( OSC Lille , CO Roubaix-Tourcoing , Racing Lens ),
- two from Paris and Champagne ( Stade Français , defending champion Stade Reims ),
- one from the northwest ( Le Havre AC ),
- four from the northeast ( FC Metz , FC Nancy , FC Sochaux , promoted Racing Strasbourg ),
- two from the southwest ( Girondins Bordeaux , newly promoted Toulouse FC ),
- six from the southeast ( AS Saint-Étienne , FC Sète , Olympique Nîmes , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , newly promoted AS Monaco ).
Season course
Defending champion Reims got into the season best - over the entire season away (only two defeats, but nine wins) than in front of their own audience - and last year's third Bordeaux into the season, which went down in the annals as "curious" and "highly dramatic". Lille, however, initially accumulated mostly draws; the later champion proved to be comparatively less powerful offensively, but had an almost insurmountable defense. With seven game days before the end, Bordeaux led the table with a supposedly reassuring lead, then a 4-1 defeat against relegated Le Havre opened an exciting final: on the fourth from last game day, Lille beat Bordeaux, making Reims temporarily top of the table with two points as a laughing third Conquered lead. After the penultimate round, all three opponents were tied because Lille had won in Reims and Bordeaux had lost in Toulouse - the promoted team was the only team able to maintain close contact with the troika in the lead. The 34th matchday saw the direct duel between Bordeaux and Reims, which were drawn, while Lille had taken the decisive step to the title with a victory over Nancy, although the LOSC was already one point given the result of the opponents and the significantly better goal difference would have.
At the bottom of the table, Sète, the third from last, founding member of the league , continuously represented in Division 1 , was relegated , accompanied by Le Havre. In the after the end of the season barrages of the 16th against the third in Division 2 it came to the "brotherly fight of the capital city clubs" in which Racing prevailed against Stade Français. In addition, Olympique Lyon and AS Troyes-Savinienne qualified as direct promoters for the following season .

The master's players
During the season, the following 20 players were used under coach André Cheuva (in brackets: number of point games): Jean Baratte (4), Guillaume Bieganski (31), Gérard Bourbotte (14), Roland Clauws (2), Jean-Paul Desrousseau (19), Yvon Douis (25), Jean-Pierre Knayer (6), Christian Lagon (2), Bernard Lefèvre (26), Robert Lemaître (30), Antoine Pazur (27), Edmond Plewa (9), André Pottier (3), César Ruminski (34), Marceau Somerlinck (34), André Strappe (33), Jacques Van Cappelen (12), Cor van der Hart (31), Jean Vincent (31), Étienne Wesolek (1)
A complete list of the shooters from Lille's 49 hits does not exist in the available literature. In addition to the Strappe placed in the top scorer list, Douis in particular was involved. Never before, however, had a team become French champions with such a low number of goals, not even in terms of the average number of goals per game in the 1932/33 season, when the champions only had to play 19 matches.
