Vashti Murphy McKenzie

Vashti Murphy McKenzie (* 28. May 1947 ) is an American , Methodist Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church .

Life

After finishing school, McKenzie studied journalism and received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland . She later passed the exams for a Masters in Theology from Howard University and a PhD in Ohio from United Theological Seminary . In 1984 McKenzie was ordained a deacon and pastor in a church in Chesapeake City , Maryland . She then served as pastor in Baltimore at the Payne Memorial AME Church. In 2000 McKenzie was elected bishop, making it the first woman bishop in the AME Church. As an author, McKenzie has written several books with theological content, particularly on the ordination of women . McKenzie is married to Stan McKenzie.
