Vasilis Michaelides

Vasilis Michaelides , also Vassilis Michaelides (* around 1850 in Leukonoikon , † December 18, 1917 in Limassol ), was a Cypriot poet and painter .

Michaelides is considered the most important poet of Cyprus. He wrote his works in the Greek Cypriot dialect. He was born around 1850 in the village of Leukonoikon near Famagusta . Michaelides first studied icon painting in Nicosia and Larnaka .

In 1873 he published his first poems Die Zinswucherei and Swallows and Owls . In 1875 Michaelides traveled to Italy to continue his painting studies in Naples . He returned to Cyprus three years later and worked for the newspaper Truth in Famagusta. In 1882 he published his first collection of poems entitled The Sick Lyra . From 1884 he worked as a volunteer nurse in the hospital of Famagusta. In 1888 he published the satirical paper Diabolos . In 1893 he wrote the works Anerada , Chiotin and his most famous poem July 9, 1821 . In 1911 he published a volume of poetry with the simple title Poems . Four years later he wrote the work Vision of the Romanian .

Michaelides suffered from alcoholism for many years and died completely impoverished.
