The Vater-Rhein-Brunnen is located in Munich (Bavaria) on the Museum Island north of the Ludwigsbrücke . It is dedicated to the river god Rhine .
The fountain was created by the Munich sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand (1847–1921), whose work includes other well-known fountains in Munich, such as the Wittelsbacher fountain . The inscription Argentorato , Latin for Strasbourg , refers to the history of the fountain: Hildebrand created the fountain for Strasbourg from 1897 to 1903 and erected it there on Broglieplatz. After the French invaded Strasbourg in 1918, the fountain was finally dismantled in 1919. In 1929 the bronze figure came to Munich in exchange for another work of art, the Meiselocker (bird dealer) fountain figure , and was rebuilt in its current location in 1932 with some original parts , but also with replicas of lost elements such as the putti.
