BV2, leaving the port of Vegesack

The Vegesack is an iron sailing logger that was launched as a herring logger at the Bremer Vulkan shipyard in 1895 and carries the fishing number BV 2 . Since 2018, the ship is a moving monument under monument protection .

The Vegesack was delivered to the logger fishery Bremen-Vegesacker Fischerei-Gesellschaft as hull number 350 with 73.6 GRT and 66.4 NRT with a length of 20.26 meters and a width of 5.35 meters and a draft of 2.85 meters . She was the second ship of the first series BV 1 to BV 10 of this company. In 1906, like the entire series, it was enlarged on the Bremer Vulkan and now had the dimensions 81.6 GRT, 63.6 NRT, length: 22.08 m, width 5.38, draft 2.82 m.

By 1914 she had carried out a total of 20 fishing trips, mainly under captains from the Mindener Land. Of these 8 voyages (1907 and 1908) under Captain E. Böse from Windheim and 22 voyages from 1909 to 1914 under Captain A. Busse from Münchehagen. During this time there were several incidents: from the 4th fishing trip in 1897, after losing the anchor and chain, she had to be brought in by a fish steamer to Geestemünde. On the 4th fishing trip in 1901, she was de-masted and towed to Cuxhaven by a fish steamer. In July 1909 a sailor drowned.

The sailing loggers were usually manned by 14 men. In addition to the captain and his representative, the best man (later a helmsman with a patent), the crew also included seven sailors, three ordinary sailors (two Audste and youngest ) and two cabin boys ( Avhauer and Reepschießer ). An ordinary seaman or sailor performed the duties of the cook. The sail lugger made annually four trips and caught the drift net herring, which immediately after the catch on board to salt and Matjes herring were processed. They were slaughtered (grooved), salted and stored in wooden barrels ( kantjes ).

The Vegesack BV2 had an eventful past with different owners and names. From 1922 she ran under the name Lili as a freighter for various north German owners. She spent the period from 1939 to 1971 in Sweden, from 1945 under the name Monika Hansen, from 1951 renamed to Nostra and was restored under the latter name in 1979/1980 by the owner F. Laer, Hamburg. Since 1989 it has been called Vegesack BV2 again and today the sailing logger belongs to the Maritime Tradition Vegesack Nautilus eV association and is operated by Vegesack Logger BV2 GmbH .
