Veikko Ilmari Salminen (born August 12, 1945 in Helsinki ) is a former Finnish pentathlete , fencer and swimmer .
Career
Salminen was twice a participant in the Olympic Games . At the 1972 Games in Munich , he finished 17th in the individual modern pentathlon. With the team, which consisted of Salminen, Martti Ketelä and Risto Hurme , he won the bronze medal . Four years later, at the Olympic Games in Montreal , he competed in fencing . In the epee singles he achieved a shared 58th place, with the team a shared eleventh place.
At the national level, Salminen collected titles in all of his sports. He was national champion in modern pentathlon three times (1971, 1974 and 1978), just as often he won the team title in epee fencing (1968, 1970 and 1972). In swimming he was Finnish champion five times in a row from 1963 to 1967 with the relay over 4 × 200 m freestyle.
Salminen was a firefighter by profession.
