Velidhoo ( Dhivehi ވެލިދޫ) (also: Velidhu ) is an island in the Maldives that was developed for tourism. It is located in the north of the Ari Atoll ( Dhivehi އއ/ Alif Alif) around 76 kilometers west of Malé and, excluding the beach, is around 350 meters long and 275 meters wide. The area of ​​the island is 9.0 hectares , 7.1 hectares excluding the beach.

Transport and traffic

The transfer from Hulhulé Island , where Malé Airport is located, takes around 25 minutes by seaplane. Another means of transport, especially in a storm, is the speedboat. The traditional ship of the Maldives, the Dhoni , is mainly used for excursions, transports or sport fishing .

Flora and fauna

The island is densely overgrown with bushes and coconut trees. One of the sights is the bodu nikagas tree, which is over 500 years old . Herons and fruit bats live on the island . Lizards , spiders and other small animals as well as insects can also be seen everywhere.

At the house reef of the island are many types of fish , corals , snails and turtles at home. Small blacktip reef sharks and various rays even come close to the beach.

Culture

Day trips to local islands are offered and traditional handicrafts can be bought in the island shop.

Maldivian island evenings are held every two weeks , with Maldivian folk music and dance performances on the program.
