Map of Gaul and the Gallic Tribes

The Vellavers ( Latin Vellavi ) were a small Celtic tribe in the Velay region south of the French massif central .

history

In the middle of the 1st century BC The Vellavers were part of the Gallic tribal alliance under Vercingetorix against Julius Caesar . Possibly they were a subgroup of the Catuvellauni ; other researchers assume a Ligurian origin, but much is unclear. After the defeat by Caesar, they continued to settle in the Auvergne , but in the 4th and early 5th centuries they were subjugated by invading Germanic tribes and gradually assimilated.

The capital of their settlement area was initially Ruessium (today in the municipality of Saint-Paulien ); Le Puy (Civitas Vellavorum) took its place in the 4th century at the latest .
