Life

Military career

Vello Loemaa began his military career with the Air Force of the Soviet Union . After completing his officer training in 1973, he began as a simple fighter pilot and rose to the rank of colonel over the next few years .

When his homeland regained its independence in the early 1990s, he quit his service in the Red Army and joined the Estonian armed forces that were being reconstructed . There he participated in the development of the air force and was entrusted with various management tasks (Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force, Acting Chief of Staff and Commander of the Armed Forces). In 1998 he was sent to NATO as a military representative of Estonia (himself a member of the Alliance from 2004). At the same time, he also acted as head of the military EC delegation in his home country. He carried out both activities until 2002 - from 2003 he was responsible for the foreign operations of the Estonian armed forces.

In 2005 he was appointed military attaché in the United States and Canada , with the rank of Brigadier General. Three years later he moved back to Brussels, where he once again took over the post of Estonia's military representative to NATO and the EU. In June 2010 he was promoted to major general. In March 2011, Vello Loemaa retired at the age of 60. His successor as military representative in NATO and the EU was Neeme Väli .

Private

Vello Loemaa is married and has two adult children (a son and a daughter).
