The Velodromo Giovanni Monti is a velodrome in Italian Padua .

The Velodromo is the oldest sports facility in Padua and the oldest municipal sports facility in Italy. It was built from 1914 to 1915 on the site of the monastery of Santa Maria della Misericordia , closed in 1808 . The sports facility initially served as a football field and was called the stadium .

From October 1915 to February 1916 the stadium was used by the Italian army as a storage area for vehicles and fuel. On February 21, 1916, the opening game took place, which AC Padova (today Calcio Padova ) won against Hellas Verona 4-0. In the winter of 1917 a team from the Italian army played against a selection from the British army. On August 18, 1918, the Brigata Padova was in the stadium in the presence of King Viktor Emanuel III. honored.

Only after the end of the war could the stadium be used without restrictions for sporting purposes. In September 1919 the 329.60 meter long, open cycling track was inaugurated. Until 1923, when the Stadio Silvio Appiani football stadium was opened right next to it, the stadium continued to serve as a venue for the AC.

In the 1930s the Velodromo was named after Giovanni Monti , who played football for AC from 1919 to 1930 and scored 51 goals in 176 games. During the First World War he was a pilot in the Italian Air Force and took part in the war in Libya as a pilot in 1924 ; he has received several awards for his work. In 1931, while preparing for a flying competition, he crashed his plane, a Macchi-Castoldi MC72 , into Lake Garda and suffered fatal injuries.

The Olympic athlete from 1936 , Severino Rigoni (silver in the team pursuit ), who then worked there successfully as a trainer for many years, trained on the cycling track . Leandro Faggin , two-time Olympic champion in 1956 , also began his career on the Monti .

In the 1990s, there was a risk that the cycling track could be torn down, especially since it was a popular object of speculation due to its attractive location on the edge of downtown Padua. In a joint action by province, city, cycling clubs and enthusiasts, headed by the Olympic champion in the points race of 1996 and former protégé of Rigoni, Silvio Martinello , managed to get the car and to renovate. On July 6, 1998, the renewed runway was inaugurated.

Today the cycle track is operated by the Scuola di Ciclismo "Leandro Faggin" association (as of 2018).
