Velvet Voices

Velvet Voices was an Austrian women's a cappella group. Her repertoire included self - arranged jazz and pop songs as well as her own compositions.

Musical career

The group Velvet Voices was founded in 2002 by the singers Coretta Kurth, Gerda Rippel, Tanja Raich and Monika Sportwetten . Instead of Tanja Raich, Miriam Fuchsberger joined the band.

In 2003, Velvet Voices opened the Voicemania festival in Vienna for the first time . Since 2004 they have sang concerts at events organized by the musical youth organization Austria's Jeunesse . They performed at the largest German a cappella festival Vokal Total in Munich , at the Hungarian Music University Szeged, the Music University Vienna, the Music University Cologne, the Bregenz Festival Hall and in the large broadcasting hall of the Radiokulturhaus Wien. The group was u. a. presented in separate broadcasts on ORF, WDR, BR, Radio Wien and Radio Arabella; the ORF broadcaster Ö1 has already broadcast concerts live. They give around 50–60 concerts a year in Europe a. a. at jazz and a cappella festivals, in concert halls, jazz clubs and theaters. From 2002 to 2007, the group received two gold placements at the international Ward Swingle Award .

In 2005 and 2009, Velvet Voices could be seen and heard together with Louise Martini in the Vienna Volkstheater production Nylons, Swing and Chesterfield with songs from the 1950s in the Volkstheater and the Wiener Kammerspiele. The group gave their last concert in November 2011 at the Porgy & Bess jazz club in Vienna . The final program, Vocal Pearls, was a musical journey through the history of vocal popular music. In 2012, the contra-alto voice of the Velvet Voices, Monika Sportwetten, died of cancer. Tanja Raich sang in her place at a memorial concert for Monika Sportwetten 2013.
