Venugopalan Ittekkot

Venugopalan AW Ittekkot (born May 10, 1945 in Ernakulam , today part of Kochi (India) ) is a German biogeochemist of Indian descent. He was director of the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) in Bremen for 10 years .

Ittekkot mainly investigated the biochemical relationships in the sea under the influence of terrestrial substances (discharge of sewage, etc.). He was a professor and from 2000 to 2010 director of the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT) in Bremen. He worked as a consultant for national and international institutions such as the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) (intergovernmental organization as part of UNESCO ), the SCOR and others. One of his most important concerns was capacity building in the countries of the Global South through research collaborations.

Under his leadership, the center was accepted into the Leibniz Association , one of the four largest scientific organizations in Germany, in 2009 .
