Association of Dresden Ball Game Clubs

The Verband Dresdner Ballspiel-Vereine (VDBV) was a local football association in the Saxon city of Dresden . The VDBV was founded on January 28, 1901 by the three clubs Dresdner FC von 1893 , Dresdner SC 1898 and BC Sportlust 1900 Dresden .

In the second half of the 1890s, football slowly began to emerge in Dresden , but after just a few years the movement almost completely fell asleep again. Above all, the once most important club in the city, the Dresdner FC from 1893 (formerly Neuer Dresdner FC from 1893) fell apart due to internal disputes. With a lot of money, a modern, fenced-in sports field with changing rooms and a beer bar, which only a few sports centers could offer at the time, was built. The club members hardly ever used the facility, as the following newspaper announcement shows: "Mr. Carl Thomas, the founder and long-time chairman of the Dresden soccer club from 1893, asks us to add the following lines:" Despite restless work and great pecuniary sacrifices did not succeed in making our beautiful sport really flourish in Dresden. At the same time, the gates of the Dresden soccer sports field I created close. "

Around 1900 there were only a few clubs in Dresden , there were still three student associations and the game departments at the secondary schools. Although there was an interest in football, the constant quarrels within and between the clubs slowed down any further development. Furthermore, more sports fields were missing and the clubs refrained from any public relations work by means of notices in local newspapers. For months there weren't even friendly matches. The times when the former English FC Dresden played games against BTuFC Viktoria 89 and its successor, Neue Dresdner FC from 1893 , against other Berlin clubs and clubs from Leipzig, Chemnitz and Mittweida, were long gone.

For years the (new) Dresdner FC from 1893 had existed as the only football club in Dresden. With the establishment of the Dresdner SC in 1898, local competition arose, which also significantly disrupted the relationship between the two clubs. Only with the founding of the Dresden Ball Game Association and through the mediation of BC Sportlust did a reconciliation come about. In contrast to most other cities and regions, the relationship between footballers and gymnasts in Dresden was neutral, so that the gymnastics association allowed its clubs to play games against local football clubs.

The three founding clubs played the first Dresden championship from March to September 1901, which BC Sportlust won. From the 1901/02 season, the Dresden clubs formed the second Gau (Dresden - later East Saxony) in the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs (VMBV), but the VDBV remained. Also in the 1902/03 season only point games were played in the VMBV, while in the 1903/04 season hardly any reports from Dresden appeared in contemporary sports newspapers.

In the 1904/05 season, three Dresden clubs took part in the points round in Gau II of the Association of Central German Ball Game Clubs, but at the same time championship games in two divisions were organized in the VDBV. By founding new clubs, eight clubs took part in the VDBV's last season. After the end of the season, in the spring or summer of 1905, the association with the VMBV and the dissolution of the Dresden Ball Game Association took place.
