The guidelines for the construction of roads - part: network design ( RAS-N for short ) were a technical set of rules valid in Germany and essentially dealt with the division of German roads into different category groups . The official name is, however, guidelines for the construction of roads, part: Guide to the functional structure of the road network .

The RAS-N was valid since 1988 and replaced the guidelines for the construction of rural roads, part: Road network design (RAL-N) from 1977. The RAS-N was replaced in October 2008 by the guidelines for integrated network design (RIN for short).

content

The RAS-N consisted of three main sections. The first section dealt with the principles of road network design and named planning goals for road construction. The second section regulated the division of the streets according to street categories. This were road capabilities , connectivity features and category groups defined. The third section dealt with the functional design of the road network. In the appendix to the guideline, application examples for determining the connection function and road category were shown.

Explanations

Road function

The RAS-N distinguishes between three different road functions:

  • Connection function
  • Development function
  • Residence function

From these functions, which can also occur mixed, category groups can be formed below.

Category groups

In the category groups a distinction between the situation of the road, whether they cultivated or growing freely and according to the principal function of the road. These are the following categories:

  • A - outside built-up areas, without cultivation and with a connection function
  • B - within built-up areas, without cultivation and with a connection function
  • C - within built-up areas, cultivated and with a connecting function
  • D - within built-up areas, cultivated and with a development function
  • E - within built-up areas, cultivated and with a residence function

Category A, B and C roads are called connecting roads.

Connection functional levels

There are 6 groups for the connection function:

Combination of category and function

The linking matrix from the street category and the connection function theoretically results in 30 different possible combinations, e.g. B. B III. However, not all of them are implemented in practice, as they lead to illogical connections or serious conflicts of use arise. The combinations D I, E I, and E II are considered unacceptable , the combinations C I, D II and E III are considered very problematic , the combinations B I, C II, D III and E IV are considered problematic and the combinations BV, B VI, CV, C VI and D VI usually do not appear and therefore have no practical significance .
